The 10-night ‘Australia by Paddlewheel and Locomotion’ package – available from June to November, 2022 – features a lazy, four-night cruise along the legendary Murray River aboard the only overnight passenger paddlesteamer on the river, the deluxe, 18-guest PS Emmylou, and a journey aboard the epic Indian Pacific train.

The enchanting and renewed PS Emmylou paddlewheeler starred in the hit 1983 TV mini-series, ‘All the Rivers Run’, starring Sigrid Thornton, and is still one of the most recognisable and iconic paddlesteamers in Australia.

This very special itinerary begins with a night’s accommodation in a five-star Melbourne hotel before a transfer to the Murray River town of Echuca to board the river boat, Emmylou, which offers overnight, boutique river cruises. A relaxing four-night sojourn along the meandering Murray follows, with visits to wineries, historic farm stations, indigenous sites and the World Heritage-listed river red gum wetlands at Barmah.

Guests will also enjoy meals and complimentary barista-made espresso coffees and dinner beverages on deck, riverside picnics, a memorable campfire dinner on the riverbank under the stars and the chance to join the crew in the wheelhouse and even try their hand at steering the boat alongside the skipper. At dusk, the rare, wood-fired paddlesteamer ties up at tranquil and remote moorings, allowing guests to experience the serenity and wildlife of the bush at night.

After another five-star hotel stay back in Melbourne, guests will fly to Adelaide for a three-night stay in a five-star hotel with free time to explore the stately city before boarding the famous Indian Pacific train for an overnight journey to Sydney via the World Heritage listed Blue Mountains, where the train will stop for a local, included tour. Offering all-inclusive fine dining, wines and beverages, the Indian Pacific train is designed to rekindle the golden era of rail travel, with panoramic windows in sleeping cabins and the lounge and restaurant cars. The itinerary ends in Sydney.

Four departure dates are available in 2022 – 26 June, 31 July, 18 September and 6 November.

Including a flight from Melbourne to Adelaide, meals and beverages on the Indian Pacific and meals and dinner beverages on PS Emmylou as well as transfers along the way, the 10-night ‘Australia by Paddlewheel and Locomotion’ package is available from $4995 per person, twin-share (June 26, 2022 departure).

Small ship specialist, Cruise Traveller, is offering considerable savings on a new luxury rail, sail and stay adventure across the Australian continent and then to Tasmania in December 2022, embracing some of Australia’s most spectacular coastal scenery.

Available until 30 November 2021 (or sold out/withdrawn), the discount means couples can save up to A$5,460 and solo travellers A$5,530 on the exclusive, slow-travel Australian Treasures package which pairs a bucket-list journey across the continent aboard the famous Indian Pacific train and a luxe Ponant small-ship expedition voyage to Tasmania visiting secluded nature-based destinations rarely visited by larger ships.

The new 13-night, pre-Christmas package begins on 10 December 2022, with a night in a five-star hotel in Perth before guests begin a three-night iconic rail journey aboard The Indian Pacific train from Perth to Sydney. The legendary 4,352km trans-continental trip offers all-inclusive dining, fine wines and beverages as well as unforgettable off train experiences in Kalgoorlie, Rawlinna, Cook, Adelaide, Broken Hill and the Blue Mountains.

Reliving the golden era and romance of rail travel, guests will travel in a Gold Service with panoramic window, twin beds or solo bed and in-cabin music. In the lounge and restaurant cars, guests can enjoy all-inclusive fine wines and beverages, hearty breakfasts, two-course lunches and three-course dinners prepared by onboard chefs. The fine, locally-inspired cuisine is sourced using regional ingredients in partnership with local suppliers and providers.

In Sydney, the package offers a two-night stay in a five-star hotel before the adventure continues with a seven-night expedition voyage south to Tasmania aboard Ponant’s luxurious and intimate, 184-guest ship, Le Laperouse. Boasting a refined and intimate, French-styled elegance, Le Laperouse offers a fine dining restaurant, panoramic lounge, theatre, pool, spa and fitness centre, pesonalised service and an expert expedition team.

The cruise from Sydney to Hobart only visits small, secluded nature-based destinations accessible exclusively to smaller vessels. These include the white sands and sapphire waters of Jervis Bay and coastal forests of Eden in NSW and the tiny seaside hamlet of Swansea and pristine Maria Island in Tasmania, with a sail past spectacular Cape Huay – home to Australia’s highest sea cliffs which soar 300m from the sea. The cruise ends in Hobart.

Including excursions and drinks on the cruise and rail journey, the 13-night Australian Treasures package is available from A$7,995 per person, twin-share, in a Deluxe Balcony stateroom – a saving of A$1745 per person. A Deluxe Balcony Suite is available from A$14,145 per person, twin-share – a saving of A$2,730 per person.
