The highly anticipated Shell Pacific Mégarando event is back and ready to welcome cyclists from around the world. From the 2nd-3rd of September, the Mégarando off-road cycling event invites cyclists of all ages and abilities to explore the enchanting landscape of the South Pacific paradise, New Caledonia.

To celebrate the event, New Caledonia has launched a five-day Mégarando Bike Travel Weekend Package which includes return airfares, 4 nights at the Sheraton New Caledonia Deva Spa and Golf Resort, buffet breakfast for two, free Mégarando entry and much more – all from just $1,990 per person – that’s 35% off!

With a variety of routes suitable for all levels, the Shell Pacific Mégarando guarantees an exhilarating experience for everyone, with races against the clock for young biking fans, family trails, cross-country, orienteering and endurance challenges for seasoned competitors.

Bringing together more than 1,500 participants, 500 visitors and 150 volunteers, the Mégarando has become one of the biggest sporting events in New Caledonia. Renowned for its great atmosphere, the hugely popular Mégarando weekend offers up plenty of family fun for participants with food stalls, live entertainment, prizes, games and on-site childcare at the Mega Village. The free village is open to all attendees and not only hosts fun events, but showcases the world of mountain biking, such as initiations, tests, and more.

However, the Mégarando isn’t just about challenging yourself. During the event, cycling enthusiasts are invited to immerse themselves in the enchanting landscape of the Deva Domain. Participants will explore diverse terrains, cycling through lush rainforests, alongside crystal-clear lagoons and past picturesque villages. The beauty of the coastal plain and inland hills of the Deva Domain will leave you breathless on your cycling journey, providing a challenging yet rewarding ride that will leave lasting memories.

If you miss the Mégarando event, don’t worry because New Caledonia is a cyclist’s paradise year-round. Mountain biking is the easiest and best way to explore the rugged interior of Grand Terre. The 400 kilometre long main island is divided by a mountain range, making the differences between East and West significantly different. Whether you’re an avid trail biker or new to the sport, New Caledonia has a range of tracks of various difficulties.

Cycling The West Coast
If you are after a mountainous trail, explore the West Coast. Head to the Grande Boucle Trail of the Tango plateau in Koné. Nearly 40 kilometres long at about 510 metres in altitude and climbing more than 1,600 metres uphill, this advanced route will take you though grassy plains with a cinematic view of the lagoon.

Along the Mountains
The tropical rainforest of Parc des Grandes Fougères is a popular route for mountain biking. Head out on this 16.9 kilometer loop trail near Farino to explore the unique biodiversity of New Caledonia’s rainforests. With panoramic mountain views of the Dogny Plateau, ride along the park boundaries and through the forest to the famous heart of Farino.

Conquer The Great South
Bordering the Rivière des Lacs, trail bikers will be delighted by the cycling options in the Blue River Provincial Park. Les Boucles de la Netcha is a very special place that allows you to enjoy an extraordinary landscape of striking red soil and bright blue rivers. No fewer than seven bike trails are laid out, ranging from easy paths under 5 kilometres, to daunting trails extending 10 to 33 kilometres long.

Cycling At Noumea
If you aren’t looking to travel long distances through winding dirt paths, but yearn for the joy of cycling through a forest, the trails at Les Boucles de Tina are a perfect compromise. Located just outside Noumea, Les Boucles de Tina has around twenty bike trails that have been traced and outfitted with wooden obstacles, a bike park and pumptrack to challenge beginner cyclists.

While traversing the roads, make sure to stop by local villages and roadside stalls where there’s an array of New Caledonian local produce, pastries and cheeses to pick up along the way. Meet friendly locals and learn the culture and customs of the Kanak people with each village you pass.

Don’t miss out on the exhilaration and natural wonders of cycling in New Caledonia. Plan your next cycling adventure and discover the thrilling beauty that awaits you.
