Viking launches new Oberammergau 2020 itinerary

Viking has released a new 11-day Oberammergau, the Alps & the Rhine cruise and tour experience that visits six countries and includes eight guided tours, as well as a dramatic performance of The Passion Play, celebrated once every ten years.

The cruisetour combines Viking’s eight-day Rhine Getaway itinerary from Amsterdam to Basel with two nights in Innsbruck, Austria and one night near Oberammergau in Germany, where The Passion Play is performed.

Enjoy the Rhine region’s renowned white wines, the roots of its terraced vineyards reaching back to Roman times, and visit the picturesque city of Innsbruck, nestled in the Tyrolean Alps.

The cruise includes calls to Kinderdijk in the Netherlands, Cologne, Koblenz, Rudesheim, Speyer and Breisach in Germany, as well as Strasbourg in France.

The Passion Play’s origins date back to 1633 when the Great Plague descended upon the village. After many lives were lost, the villagers made a promise to God that they would tell the story of Christ, should no more lives be lost. The tradition continues today, once a decade.

Viking offers a total of eight Oberammergau cruise-tour combinations, including the 12-day Oberammergau with Salzburg, the 10-day Oberammergau & Romantic Danube and the 10-day Oberammergau & Danube Waltz.

Oberammergau, the Alps & the Rhine is priced from $5,895* per person, twin share, with departures on 1 July, 29 July and 12 August 2020.
