Viking’s new Great Lakes departures

Viking’s first expedition vessel Viking Octantis begins her maiden sailing season of North America’s Great Lakes this week. Coinciding with the new season sailings Viking has released six additional departures on their most popular voyages in the region. With the 2022 Great Lakes sailing season almost sold out and the 2023 sailing season filling fast, the new departures are a welcome addition for travellers keen to explore this little known natural wonder. The additional sailings are scheduled for July, August and September 2023 on the 15-day Great Lakes Collection and 8-day Niagara & the Great Lakes voyages.

Containing the largest reserves of fresh water on Earth, the Great Lakes are a wild, untamed treasure, boasting stunning national parks in a region that is rich in culture and history. On the 15-day Great Lakes Collection itinerary, guests sail the historic waterways of all five of North America’s Great Lakes. Sailing between Toronto, Canada and Duluth, Minnesota, guests will experience culture-rich urban centres and admire the thundering power of Niagara Falls. Along the journey, guests can also explore the granite islands and sheltered inlets of Georgian Bay and traverse the famous Soo Locks. On Lake Superior and Lake Michigan, study the aquatic ecosystems of the lakes and venture into the dense boreal forests that line the shores. On the shorter 8-day Niagara & the Great Lakes voyage, guests will sail from Canada’s largest city Toronto to the scenic shores of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, discovering North America’s wilderness alongside renowned cultural attractions while cruising the striking waterways of the Great Lakes. Guests will be immersed in the lakes’ compelling shipping history and experience the awe and majesty of Niagara Falls. Led by a team of experts, guests will explore sheltered bays and woodlands to uncover complex ecosystems and hidden treasures.

The new Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris expedition vessels host 378 guests in 189 staterooms. Designed for discovery by the same team that designed the award-winning Viking Longships and ocean ships, the new vessels are purpose-built for expeditions, at an ideal size for safety and comfort in remote destinations. With more indoor and outdoor viewing areas than other expedition vessels, guests are as close as possible to the most magnificent scenery on earth.
