Walk in the Canary Islands in 2023 at 2022 prices

Self-guided walk operator, On Foot Holidays, has launched a new hiking route in the subtropical Canary Islands, adding to its collection of island walking routes.

Australians and Kiwis keen to do the walk on the mountainous, volcanic island of La Gomera in 2023 can save by paying current 2022 prices if the holiday is booked by 30 September 2022.

The new walk on the remote Atlantic isle of La Gomera – a Spanish Territory off the west coast of Africa – brings to 35 the number of self-guided hikes UK-based On Foot Holidays offers in 11 countries, with the other routes all in continental Europe or the UK.

In 1492, Christopher Columbus stopped at La Gomera to restock with supplies during his history-making voyage to the ‘New World’ but fell in love with the island, staying for weeks. Today, visitors are drawn by the verdant scenery, unusual beaches of black, volcanic sand, laidback ambience and its famous ‘eternal spring’ climate which makes it ideal for hiking in the European winter months.

Curated for independent travellers, the La Gomera hike sees walkers stay at a series of rural B&Bs with luggage transferred between the accommodations while they explore the island’s magical landscapes on foot.

Available from November 2022, to May 2023, and from October 2023, to May 2024, the circular route around the lush island can be completed in seven days or shortened to as few as four. The full route starts in the pretty hamlet of Hermigua and takes in wild beaches, banana and aloe plantations, sleepy villages, rugged valleys and the spectacular views from atop the island’s highest point, Mt Garajonay. The final night’s stay is at the stylish Parador Hotel in San Sebastian with its sea views, subtropical gardens and pool for a welcome, end-of-walk swim.

Including B&B accommodation along the route, daily breakfasts, ferry and land transfers from Tenerife South airport on the larger island of Tenerife nearby, maps, directions and all luggage transfers between hotels along the way – meaning walkers simply carry a day pack each day – the journey costs from £890 per person, twin-share (about A$1,520 depending on exchange rates) for seven nights and from £745 per person, twin-share (about A$1,274) for four nights.

Australians and Kiwis who book the La Gomera hike or any other On Foot Holidays route for 2023 will pay current 2022 prices, a saving of around 10%, if they book by 30 September 2022.
